Boost Mobile is now as much a carrier as Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile.
Boost Mobile has expanded beyond simply reselling wireless communications services that have been leased from a mobile network operator (MNO) to a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO).
According to The Verge, the business is now extremely close to fulfilling a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) coverage deadline.
Once owned by T-Mobile, Boost Mobile was asked by the FCC to sell the prepaid mobile service to DISH NETWORK in order to approve the Sprint merger. DISH was purchased by EchoStar earlier this year.
The FCC gave DISH until June 14, 2023, to begin rolling out 5G internet services to at least 70% of the population in 2020. Additionally, it was directed to fulfill specific nationwide 5G deployment obligations prior to the deadline.
By then, 70 percent of Americans had access to a 5G network with download rates of about 35 Mbps, although the business asked for an extension of some 2025 deployment milestones because of unforeseen events.
Additionally, the business stated that by the end of 2024, Boost Mobile Network would have covered 80% of the population, which is 30 million more than its 2023 commitment to serve 70% of the population.
Boost Mobile, the fourth-largest carrier behind AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon, now thinks it has advanced enough to qualify as an MNO.
According to Eben Albertyn, chief technical officer of Boost, the company has activated almost 20,000 of the 24,000 cell sites it promised to roll out by June of next year.
More than half a million subscribers have switched to Boost’s own network after it previously provided services via the networks of AT&T and T-Mobile. The infrastructure of the business provides direct service to customers who join the network with a compatible device.
As intended by the FCC, the move places Boost on an equal footing with the big three. Hopefully, this will increase competition in the US and provide consumers who are dissatisfied with some unpopular moves made by the country’s biggest carriers recently with a new choice.
To entice consumers dissatisfied with their current carrier to move, Boost Mobile also launched several new promos earlier this year, such as a risk-free method to test its 5G network.
Due to its strategy of utilizing Open Radio Access Network (RAN) technologies to construct a cloud-native 5G network, the company is able to offer plans that are up to 40% less expensive than those of other carriers.
