Donald Trump has often said he would give Musk a formal role overseeing a group that would recommend ways to slash government spending.
Elon Musk and former GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy will head a new “Department of Government Efficiency,” which is not a federal entity despite its name, according to President-elect Donald Trump’s announcement on Tuesday.
A reference to Musk’s preferred cryptocurrency, dogecoin, is made by the acronym “DOGE.” In a statement, Trump said that Musk and Ramaswamy will collaborate with the Office of Management and Budget to “drive large-scale structural reform and create an entrepreneurial approach to government never seen before.” They will also provide the White House with “advice and guidance” from outside the government. The action would upset government systems, he added.
How the organization will function is unclear. It could fall under the Federal Advisory Committee Act, which establishes requirements for the conduct and public accountability of outside organizations that provide advice to the government.
In order to avoid any possible conflicts of interest, federal personnel are often expected to disclose their assets and entanglements and to sell off any sizable interests that are connected to their jobs. Musk and Ramaswamy would not be subject to such regulations or ethical restrictions as they would not be considered official federal employees.

Since Trump’s victory in the presidential election, Musk has been a regular visitor to Mar-a-Lago.
The president-elect has frequently stated that he would formally assign Musk to lead a committee that would suggest measures to reduce expenditure and improve the efficiency of the federal government, much like a blue-ribbon panel. At one time, Musk said he could save over $2 trillion, which is almost a third of all yearly government expenditures.
Trump had stated that Musk would probably not have a full-time job of any type because of his other obligations.
